The end of Casper and Roy's StormChasing tour USA 2008: returning to Oklahoma and via Chicago and London to the Netherlands

The very last day of our StormChase tour in the USA. And a little bit sad because we made a mistake in our departuretime from Oklahoma airport. We planned a last chase in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, Missouri. Now we have to change plans and head to Oklahoma via the fastest possible route. Starting from Grand Island driving east along Interstate 80 to York and then south along highway 75 and following Interstate 35 from Topeka to Oklahoma. We made a last stop near Perry in Oklahoma. From Perry driving directly to the Will Rogers airport of Oklahoma. There we bring our hired Chevrolet HHR back to Budget rent a car. We are very confident of this car, it is perfectly suitable for two persons! Enough space to put all our belongings such as laptop's and camera's on the back two seats and our luggage in the rear compartment. Furthermore it is a relatively fuel efficient car and it is one of the cheapest to rent at Budget. And do not forget: driving in the USA is a big plus! Set your car at cruise control and remember the roads are nearly free of cars and it is a pleasure driving! For sure the USA is StormChase country number one! Beware: we will return!

Some words while driving along US roads...
  • Stay in your lane, do not switch lanes as we do in Europe
  • Stick to the advised upper speed limit, everybody does so
  • Exits are numbered by mileage counted from the stateborder
  • First there are signs with lodging, then food and then gas
  • Driving through small villages? stay in the left lane
  • How to deal at crossroads? We still do not know how to handle this situation, who is first??? :-(
Some words on US food...
  • Most food in the US is hamburgers or alike. Whatever restaurant along the highway: it is all equal. But there are some good exceptions: Applebee's and Old Chicago! Oh yes: I like the Mexican kind of food too...
  • Do not drink coffee in the US, it is ugly comparing to European coffee. Just drink cola or alike and ask for a small can which is comparable to European sizes...
  • All restaurants are fast and efficient so no long waiting while in a hurry after severe weather.
  • Beer is no problem: find a good store and they will have plenty of European beer! Budweiser is the mainstream US beer.
  • Breakfast is quite simple. Try the cornflakes and the roasted bread. Drink some orange juice. Everything is self-service so fast and efficient.
Some words on lodging...
  • Lodging at a motel like Super 8 is clean, efficient and at a very good price for Europeans.
  • All motels in the US look similar. Once you know how one works, you know how it works at all the others :-)
  • Ask for a non-smoking room with two queen size beds and you will be happy. Everything you need will be inclusive
  • At the reception hand over your passport, credit card and sometimes the key of your car. Answer some questions and everything runs smoothly
  • A large TV-set with at least The Weather Channel! Switch it on after entering your room and you learn the very latest. "Local on the 8's" tell you everything on the local weather.
  • Free high speed internet is included at every motel. Set up your laptop and you are connected at once!
  • Sometimes a magnetron, coffee machine, refrigerator and swimming pool are included too.
